Dear Readers, dear Colleagues,

Whereas implantology in the past was above all performed by specialists with focus on surgery, the increasing demand and the expanded indication spectrum has led to a wider establishment of dental implants in day-to-day work at a dentist’s office. Clinicians are increasingly endeavouring to offer their patients a holistic treatment at the same time taking all aspects into consideration, ranging from planning implant positioning, via surgery to restorative procedures. Implantology is thus currently not seen as an area of expertise which is assigned exclusively to specialists. Future dentists should therefore possess certain competences in implantology allowing them to identify relevant indications, to provide patients with correct information and to treat such patients within the scope of their competences or to refer them to other specialists.

The Journal of Dental Implantology (Zeitschrift für Zahnärztliche Implantologie, ZZI) is the most widely circulated journal for scientific implantology in Germany. All articles on this website are taken from the ZZI. It is the official publication of the German Society of Implantology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Implnatologie, DGI). The DGI is the largest German implantological association an also the largest in Europe. In 2005, ZZI also became the official publication of the Austrian Society of Implantology (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Implantologie in der Zahn-, Mund- und Kieferheilkunde, ÖGI). ZZI publishes peer-reviewed scientific articles as well as articles with a more practical orientation.

Dental implantology is a field of dentistry that has developed and grown explosively over the past few years. Thanks to new materials and new implant shapes and procedures, dental implantology has spread widely. Successful and broadbased research performed in Switzerland, Austria and Germany has made the German-speaking countries global leaders in this specialist field.
